Welcome to day 4 of a week filled with ideas and tips to get your crafty area organized! Today's focus is card stock, and I'm going to show you how I currently organize my card stock collection.

A hand labeled swatch book gives me quick access to the yummy MFT Card Stock colors and whets my appetite all in one. Get in my belly!
Can you read upside-down? Me too, and I prefer to think that it's like doing brain gym while I'm stamping - stimulating and strengthening my brain all in one!
I store my card stock inside the open clear packaging with the label end open and sticking out for a few reasons. First, it keeps my paper clean and crisp; second, it provides me with the label already intact; and third, I continue to have that flexibility to move my card stock colors around as needed without re-labeling the slots.
Here's a full view of my card stock cabinet. Nothing fancy about it, but it's strong, sturdy and sure looks purty with all those MFT Card Stock colors in rainbow fashion, doesn't it?
WARNING: the last two photos are my scrap collection which I'm sure will make some folks cringe...but (say it with me) it works for me. Ü
I love this scrap basket and have used it for years. It also works perfectly for my crafty son, because the rule is: anything in that basket is fair game! I like to be able to quickly grab a scrap from it because I'm honestly too lazy to file my scraps and too impatient to pull a scrap from a file. I humbly bow down to you crafters who have the patience to do it that way.
Finally is a bin with all of my die cut scraps. I love to challenge myself to look through this bin and use up a few scraps for a 5 minute card, or set it out for the crafty son, niece or nephew. Keeping these scraps in a covered bin allows room to push things around to get to the good stuff, AND keeps everything in one place! It's sort of like a 'parking lot' so to speak, because when a project just isn't going the way I'd envisioned, I can park the die cuts here to be used sometime down the road.

Wow. I love the big die cut scrap bin. I need to have ONE of those, but I tend to have "several" for big things and MANY for itty bitty hearts or stars. Sigh. Problem is, then I can never find what i'm looking for when i need it, make more ... vicious cycle.
ReplyDeleteYep... that parking lot is the way to go, Amy! Love the paper cabinet - wow. I store mine in magazine file boxes which keeps them safe and clean, but not so easily seen!

ReplyDeleteLove the swatch book you created! Your handwriting is gorgeous, btw!! Great idea to keep a drawer/bin of scrap die cuts! Right now I keep them in a folder/envelope and they get bent and are hard to search through!

ReplyDeleteMy scraps are stored right where they fall after I cut paper, and once the pile starts impeding my cutter, I throw them in gallon storage bags (by general colors) standing up in a cardboard box. Yay for hi-tech storage, lol! Love your cabinet, it's fantastic.

ReplyDeleteI am glad to see someone else with a scrap drawer like mine! I too make myself go to the scraps from time to time and use only from that drawer. It's kind of fun pushing them all around and finding a treasure of a color or die cut that happens to be just perfect for the moment!

ReplyDeleteyes, the paper must be protected, like that you keep it in the package. And ugh, scraps, it's so hard to know what to do with them - I like the bin idea and have never tried that!
ReplyDeleteWow Amy, you have got your papers squared away! The whole pieces I've not cut into yet are all mixed together in one large drawer and then I pretty much handle my scraps exactly like you do. I try using my scraps first before I cut into a whole piece though.
ReplyDeletePaper is seems is the scourge of crafts and how to sort and where to file etc, then I have to add in all the pattern paper that I have to it has been a battle. I sure hope to find some great ideas on the blog hop, I'm just starting with you, I love the basket with the scraps and I have a zillion baskets, so now I will put that to work. TFS
ReplyDeleteyour storage is much like mine. I don't have the time or patience to file away scraps. I have a basket like that, but I don't even keep most of my die cut pieces. I have learned to just toss them. lol. thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI have a scrap draw similar to your basket - it is great for my Miss 10 to help herself as you mentioned anything in there is fair game for her. Love it.

ReplyDeleteOhhh, I like your scrap-basket!! Ha, I think I have an excuse now to find a big basket. :) I had my scraps in little plastic baskets but they get kinda crumpled that way. Then I tried organizing them by color putting them into drawers, but I don't think that will work for me, outta site outta mind. I definitely like your big basket! :)

I can't be bothered to "file" my scraps, either. Big pieces go in an old page protector in the file with my new paper. Smaller scraps go in a set of drawers my sister gave me (otherwise, they'd be in a box or basket!). I had enough drawers that I have 3-4 colors per drawer, but that's the extent of my organizing. I keep my die cut scraps in a box, and enjoy going through it from time to time to see what's in there that I forgot about!
